HTC is said to develop operating systems for China - Mobile

According to the Wall Street Journal, the project will be led by HTC Chairman Cher Wang. China is now the world’s largest mobile market, and it is dominated by Android and small, domestic handset manufacturers. A targeted campaign against China feels like a logical bet.

Android is so dominant is not fully appreciated by the Chinese authorities who want to have control over the flow of information and interfere in that an American company has so much influence. Meanwhile, the other network services that are popular in China, for example, integrate Baidu search on a phone is more logical for Chinese users than Google.

It is not known if the “mobile software system,” as the Wall Street Journal puts it, should be based on Android or newly built from scratch. The former seems more logical, as it would require shorter development time and simplify the design of phones specifically for the Chinese market, but in this case, HTC look after careful where they put their feet. When Acer last year trying to develop a Chinese system along with e-commerce company Alibaba, became the phone at the last moment stopped by Google threatened to cease cooperation with Acer.

Media: HTC develops operating systems for Chinese smartphones - Business World

The Taiwanese phone manufacturer HTC is developing an operating system for smartphones for Chinese consumers.

say people familiar with the project, writes the Wall Street Journal.

The operating system, which is said to offer a deep integration of Chinese applications like the twitter-like micro-blog Weibo, could be launched before the end of 2013 .

The project reflects increased demand from Chinese consumers, but is also a result of China’s stated willingness to invest in proprietary software in counterbalance to the American giants Google and Apple. According to sources, the project is monitored by HTC Chairman Cher Wang, who has been in discussions with the Chinese authorities.

The data are in line with HTC’s plans to develop its own operating system, a goal the company stated for two years ago.

The sources point out, however, the Wall Street Journal that it is unclear if HTC’s Chinese operating system is fully autonomous, or if it is built on top of Google’s Android operating system.
