The HTC One was one of the finest Android handsets of 2013. For many it was THE Android handset of 2013, surpassing strong releases from Samsung, Sony and LG. HTC raised the bar with the One, Adding in new hardware, cutting edge design and a complete rethink of its custom Android skin, Sense.
The end result was a compelling, unique, and thoroughly captivating device. The HTC One might not have sold in the same number as the Galaxy S4 or iPhone 5s, but it did pick up awards and accolades over the globe, solidifying HTC as one of the foremost Android manufacturers in business today.
The sequel, documents currently known as the HTC M8, is expected to arrive in early 2014. Not a great deal is currently known about the M8 – or the HTC One two, as it’s also known – but what we do know is detailed below. As more information Becomes available, we’ll update this article with all the pertinent details.
HTC M8 will pack super-fast and reliable Wi-Fi capabilities
The HTC One successor, known in the absence of a launch name as the HTC M8, will be equipped with super-fast and versatile Wi-Fi capabilities, According To Certification documents.
The certification, filed with the WiFi Alliance, details That the HTC M8 will be able to access both 5GHz and 2.4GHz Wi-Fi band, meaning it’ll be able to take full advantage of superfast 5GHz CapAble routers.
According To a report from the Telegraph, the HTC M8 will “support all of the Wi-Fi standards, including the latest 802.11ac standard,” for super-fast speeds, more reliable connectivity and lower power consumption.
As well as detailing the next-gen Wi-Fi performance, the certification is further proof of the M8′s existence after a UK judge outed the successor model During a Recent HTC vs Nokia court case Which saw the HTC One Mini banned from sale via an injunction.
The HTC M8 is expected to arrive in the first quarter of 2014.
HTC One successor – M8 – will launch in “early 2014″
The judge has spoken: HTC’s One follow-up, codenamed P8, will launch in “early 2014″
HTC’s been having a right old time of it Lately. Sales are down across the UK and Europe and it just got its One Mini handsets banned in the UK courtesy of Nokia. And that’s a shame Because HTC is one of the best Android manufacturers out there. Yes, the One Max was a bit of damp squib, but the HTC One and its smaller sibling, the One Mini, were both thoroughly excellent handsets.
Amidst all this doom and gloom, however, there is a mica of light – we now know the HTC M8 [2014's follow-up the HTC One] will be launching in early 2014. News of the release comes via the UK judgeship That presided over HTC and Nokia’s Recent patent case where the One Mini was banned.
Judge Richard Arnold said, “HTC is close to launching the successor model to the flagship HTC One.” Arnold added the One successor could launch as early as February, meaning an MWC 2014 reveal could be on the cards. HTC’s lawyers did not refute the judge’s claims either.
So far HTC has managed to avoid a ban on its flagship HTC One, a small blessing given the company’s current financial state. The had, however, Granted Nokia’s application to overpriced block sales of HTC’s Windows Phone-powered 8X and 8S handsets.
Nokia providied THE FOLLOWING statement on the judge’s ruling:
“Nokia is pleased That the UK High Court has Imposed an injunction on certainkind HTC products found in October to infringe a Nokia patents. The injunction is stayed until December 6 to allow HTC time to appeal. Pending the appeal, HTC has under taken not to ship any more of the infringing products into the UK, except the HTC One Which May it continue to sell until the pullout of any appeal., If HTC does not succeed on appeal, the injunction will take effect on all infringing products. Nokia ice overpriced Claiming financial compensation for the Infringement of this patent. “
HTC M8 specs show 800 Snapdragon chip and 4MP Ultra Pixel camera
Reports emerged EARLIER this week of a device thought to be the HTC M8, the successor model to the HTC One (M7), clocking up an impressive 36.000 score in AnTuTu.
Further investigation by AnTuTu’s creators has revealed thatthis is indeed the work of a Snapdragon 800 chip.
While the HTC 0P6B120 does not use the HTC M8 name Directly, it does seem pretty likely That it is the rumored device as it uses a software build labeled “ htc_m8-userdebug | 4.4 | KRT160.”
The HTC M8 now seems to have a pretty well-rounded spec sheet thanks to the work of AnTuTu’s team.
The spec line-up includes Android 4.4 KitKat, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 MSM8974AB chip with 2GB of RAM and an Adreno 330 graphics processing unit (GPU), 16GB of onboard storage and a 5-inch full HD 1080p display.
Also Listed is a 2.1-megapixel primary camera and a 4-megapixel secondary. While no specific mention of HTC’s Ultra Pixel technology is made, the fact That it’s rated at 4-megapixels Suggests it is the very same hardware Which appeared in the HTC One, Which overpriced packed optical image stabilization (OIS).
It’s a bit of a shame, as we noted in our HTC One review, the Ultra Pixel tech would probably generate option more impressive results were in t Associated with a higher megapixel rating of around 8-megapixels.
Still, HTC’s implementation of the higher-rated Snapdragon chip looks to be a suitable boost all round on performance, if AnTuTu’s bar charts are anything to go by.
Mysterious HTC device could be M8
The device has scored 36,532, a score to rival the LG G2 and the Sony Xperia Z1, on AnTuTu benchmarking software.
The result is higher than any other HTC-made smartphone and all we know at the moment is the model number Which is HTC 0P6B120.
Blog of Mobile uploaded a screenshot of the benchmarking software result. With that kind of score its very likely the device includes a Snapdragon 800 chip meaning it must be HTC’s mightiest device.
The HTC One is now Dating fixed so the M8 successor must be near. Rumours still seem to point toward an early-2014 release date for the M8 and will most likely feature Android’s 4.4 OS KitKat.
@ evleaks believes the M8 will have a 5-inch screen Compared to the HTC One’s 4.7-inch panel.
HTC M8 Specs & Images leaked
So we alreadycreated knew what HTC M8 – the successor to the HTC One – looks like. Now, thanks to @ evleaks, we know more about its specs. According To them:
If they’re right, That means When HTC’s next flagship phone Becomes official it’ll be the first HTC running a Snapdragon 800 chipset. But as GSMArena points out, while the specs look good now HTC could end up a “generation late”, as happened with the HTC One Max, “because Samsung is alreadycreated Developing its next-gen 64-bit processor for the Galaxy S5.”
Other leaked information Suggests it’ll launch with Android 4.4 KitKat straight out of the box alongwith HTC Sense 6.0, the next-generation of software Which would be placed over the top of Android.
While this isn’ta the first we’ve heard of the HTC M8 not much else is known about the handset. The one thing we can draw from it though, Assuming that name is correct, Is that it’ll be the direct successor to the HTC One flagship, Which was dubbed the M7 while under development.
The images below appeared via Chinese leak source Eprice and only show the rear cover for the handset. It’s not clear Whether the phone will sport a removable back panel like the HTC One Max or if it will be assembled as a sealed unit like the HTC One and HTC One Mini.
One confusing part of the design is a small round hole above the camera port. This can not be the camera flash, as we can see a small flash port next to the main camera port. There’s no indication of what its purpose could be but it’s unlikely That it’s a fingerprint scanner as the HTC One Max featured a square design underneath the camera port.
Assuming that it’s not a fingerprint scanner it would Appear HTC has ditched the digit scanning tech for its next flagship, I think it is as well in our view as it was a bit naff on the One Max.
There’s been a lot of talk recently about eye scanners, Particularly as Samsung is rumored to be working on this kind of tech. Could this be what we’re looking at? Existing rumors suggest we could see a display between 5-inches and 5.2-inches, Which would likely use HTC’s favorite SLCD technology and is thought to have a 2K resolution.
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 quad-core chip has been fingered, Which makes sense, and it’s believed HTC could pull a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 by opting for 3GB of RAM.
Quite what version of Android will be onboard is unknown but it’s either going to be 4.3 Jelly Bean or the brand new 4.4 KitKat, and it’s said there will be a new HTC Sense UI overlay 6.
Almost as important – what the heck is it going to be called? We’ve had the HTC One, HTC One Max and HTC One Mini, but let’s not forget the old HTC One X, HTC One S, HTC One V, HTC One X + and HTC One XL, just to take up a few more possible Names. Where does that leave us? HTC Two? HTC One Plus? Your guess is as good as ours. There’s no clue as to When The HTC M8 will Precisely arrive but a launch in 2014 seems a certainty.
